How Long Are Zirconia Based Crowns Expected To Last
With normal metal based porcelain crowns the recommendation is usually to replace them every 5 to 10 years. The metal in metal based crowns have a tendency to discolour with age leading to a visible dark line around the gum line which can become a reason for replacement.
With zirconia based crowns there is no discolouration and because of the computer aided manufacturing process the crown fits the tooth perfectly meaning no bacteria can get underneath so undermining the supporting tooth.
Zirconia is also 100% biocompatible leading to much less bacteria build up.
Though the porcelain may chip and in some cases force the replacement all in all because of the zirconia the lifetime of the zirconia based crown is estimated to be double that of conventional metal based crowns.
