Smile Savers in The News

Initially there wasn't a huge flurry of press activity but I guess that's because we get a lot of business through recommendations and word of mouth (so to speak). Recently though, with the new NHS contracts now in force in the UK and with more and more people making the trip to Budapest, we have had quite a bit of interest shown us by the media. Still it's always a pleasant surprise for us to see our company's name in print, (or these days on TV!). A big thank you to all the journalists who took the time to write about us.

Sunday Times Logo

Sunday Times Money Section: Retired health-food shop owner Linda Williamson, 54, saved more than £20000 having dental work done in Budapest rather than her hometown of Ashington, near Newcastle upon Tyne. She arranged the trip through Smite Savers Hungary, and paid £9,900 for the work, which included implants and crowns, and would have cost up to £30,000 in Britain. ‘Even once you take accommodation and travel costs into account I saved a lot, as an implant in this country costs about £2,000 and a crown is at least £300,’ she said. ‘My dentist here said he thought the materials and the workmanship were of a very high standard.’ She recommends ‘tooth tourism’ also for the experience: she stopped off for treatment white driving through Austria and Hungary. ‘It felt like a holiday,’ she said. 24/08/2008 - The Sunday Time's journalist Jessica Bown here tracks a potential shift in policy that could allow people travelling abroad for dental treatment to claim back some of their costs from the NHS. Good news for our clients as there is even some suggestion that money can be claimed back retrospectively. The article also featured Smile Saver's client Linda Williamson who saved an estimated £20,000 on extensive implant treatment at The Implant Center in Budapest. Even Linda's dentist back home commented that the materials and workmanship were of a 'very high standard.'

The Sun Money Logo

The Sun Money article entitled A Long Trip To The Dentist - FED-up Brits are taking holidays they can get their teeth into. The soaring cost of getting teeth fixed in the UK has created a boom in dental tourism for a growing number who can’t get treatment on the NHS and don’t want — or cannot afford — to pay big bills for going private. Hungary, Poland, Turkey, Croatia, Bulgaria and even Thailand are cashing in on the growing market because of their low-cost, often high-quality dental care. Apart from the sky-high cost of private dentistry in the UK, the shocking statistic that seven million Brits can’t find an NHS dentist is fuelling the rush to get troublesome gnashers fixed at foreign clinics. Companies are now offering attractive travel packages that often include flights, transport, top hotels and cut-price dental work at clinics across Europe. Some Hungarian clinics offer 70 per cent savings over UK dental prices. Extractions cost around £28, root canal work about £100, crowns £173 and dental implants £665. 29/07/2008 - "Britain's Favourite Newspaper" covered Smile Savers with a double page center spread in their money section. The story covered three of our clients' stories including Emily Mayer, Ernie Whittle and Linda Williamson. A big thank you to them for taking the time to speak to the journalists and to the journalists for such a great piece.

ONE woman who saved a fortune on dental care is sculptor Emily Mayer — she says her trip to Hungary was the best decision she has ever made. The 47-year-old had all her teeth removed because of gum disease and faced a lifetime of wearing uncomfortable dentures. So Emily, from Thetford in Norfolk, searched the internet for treatment abroad after hearing it would be far cheaper than in the UK. She chose a state-of-the-art surgery in Budapest for the work that would transform her life. Not only does she now have a perfect set of white teeth, the treatment cost her £20,000 - half the amount she would have shelled out to a UK dentist. Emily, who has been married to artist husband John for ten years, explained: “Gum disease had ruined my life. I was so low I was depressed for a year. I took my courage in both hands and went to what looked like a very nice surgery in Budapest. It was the best thing I’ve ever done. “I was met at the airport with a bouquet of flowers and taken to the Budapest Implant and Aesthetic Centre. I was amazed at the friendly staff and cleanliness of the place.” Emily was advised by dental surgeon Dr Attila Kaman to have 11 implants done the following day - a five-hour session in the dentist chair but a stint she says was remarkably pain-free. She returned home to Thetford and has since mode two further trips at three-monthly intervals to complete her treatment. Emily now looks and feels years younger and has only praise for the treatment. She and John hove fallen in love with Budapest and bought a holiday flat in the city. She said: “I had to go into my savings and I couldn’t have afforded to do it here but it has been worth every penny. “The standards in Budapest are fantastic, very hygienic and professional. The clinic even arranged for a bottle of champagne to be left in the apartment we were staying in. Best of all, I can smile again without feeling self-conscious. Anyone thinking of going abroad should give Budapest serious thought.’ Emily Mayer's story was covered seperately on the same page.

Shirley Norton from the Scotsman's news feature - click here to read the article in a new window. SHIRLEY Norton (49), a development officer in disabled housing from Aberdeen, believes she saved as much as £13,500 by flying to Hungary to have cosmetic dental work carried out on her teeth, writes Sofia Speedy.
“I’m the last person you would expect to go abroad and get anything done at all,” she says.
“But I looked at a lot of feedback and did a lot of homework before I went and thought - I’ll go for it.”
Norton was impressed by Smile Savers Hungary, which she found online and which arranged her treatment for her. This included having two teeth extracted, 17 crowns
put in place, two dental implants and a sinus bone graft, in order to straighten out two crossed front teeth and improve her smile.
“You’re so well looked after, they pick you up from the airport, take you to all your appointments - I can’t fault them and I’m so pleased with the outcome,” she said.
In total, the treatment cost her around £6,000, which she estimates is about a third of the cost in the UK. It involved three trips to Budapest, two of which she turned into week-long holidays with her partner, while the third involved an overnight stay.
While happy with her own dentist at home, Norton describes this as a “different sort of dentistry” and says the cost of getting the work done in the UK was prohibitive.
12/04/2008 - The Scotsman newspaper covered the ways to deal with the cost of UK dentistry covering NHS, dental insurance and dental tourism. Our client Shirley Norton was featured after she travelled to Budapest for cosmetic and implant work saving herself an estimated £13,500.

“I’m the last person you would expect to go abroad and get anything done at all,” Shirley told The Scotsman.

Daily Mail center page article drawn from the recently released book by David Hancock, entitled 'A Patients Guide to Health Tourism' detailing the options people in the UK have when choosing treatment abroad. The heading reads 'No Waiting Lists. Spotless Hospitals. Brilliant after-care. Why more and more Britons are choosing surgery abroad'On 09/05/2006 the Daily Mail ran this piece, entitled 'A Patients Guide to Health Tourism', based on a recent book written by David Hancock, covering the options people have when choosing to go abroad for treatment. The heading reads 'No Waiting Lists. Spotless Hospitals. Brilliant after-care. Why more and more Britons are choosing surgery abroad'. Hungary came out top as the place to go for high quality low cost treatment and they very kindly included us as a recommended operator though tragically listed a disconnected phone number. Fortunately they got our web site address right!
As a side note we should point out that the usual time for the first phase of implant surgery can be completed in just 3 days and not 12 as stated in the article. Read more here

Nicola, despite always being very fastidious about dental hygiene, contracted serious gum disease and was told her only option was to have all her teeth replaced by dentures. Like so many she was not prepared to wear dentures at her age and was quoted in the UK up to £50,000 for the implant work necessary to avoid this. Nicola contacted Smile Savers and we were more than happy to book her in to the renowned Implant Center in Budapest. Nicola loved the picture and has become quite the local celebrity having also been interviewed live on BBC Radio Sheffield.
