Everyone has a different smile that is right for them. The shape of the jaw, the position of the eyes, the width of the smile and even sometimes the colour of the hair play an important role in deciding the final look of a persons ideal smile. Many factors play an important role in designing the perfect smile: tooth length, width, shape, relative proportions, hue, colour and more. In the following pages we’ll try to shed light on this fascinating subject and how we achieve our results….

The number one place to start with anything to do with beauty, or rather what people generally perceive as beauty, is the 7/10 rule. Of course this is a huge presumption and generalization to say that beauty can be defined as a mere fraction. However, there does seem to be something in the idea, at least on a physical level. Scientists who study these things have turned over some surprising results about the way we perceive things to be beautiful. The ideal ratio of one physical bodily attribute to another turns out to be 7 to 10 (as opposed to 8 out of 10 which is only relevant to cats!).

For example the distance between your chin and your eyes and your chin and your brow is most appealing when it is in the ratio 7 to 10. The same goes for the relationship between a woman’s hip and her waist. Or the difference between the eyes and the tip of the nose and the eyes and the mouth. Or the width of one of the top front teeth compared to it’s height: 7 to 10….

This rule is relevant when we smile because teeth are one of the first points of reference when meeting and talking to people. More and more, because of the lives we lead, we are forced to draw conclusions about people from what we see of them. A smile in one of these situation can convey a huge amount of information. After all, it is by no accident that we have oversized flat front teeth. They have a dual purpose, being both physically functional for eating but also, and most importantly in this matter, for display. Most of us respond very strongly to this built-in display mechanism, which shows itself most often in the form of a smile. Immediately when we see a smile we respond without consciously thinking about it using this 7/10 rule….

This is of course only what most would call a ‘first impression’ but what follows has been proven to be hugely influential on us. But even if we don’t care about this essentially shallow, though instinctive, response it is something that most people benefit hugely from having. Being confident enough to beam a huge smile to someone or to laugh openly without covering our mouths is a fantastic thing to be able to do and with it comes a certain confidence that everyone appreciates having in themselves….

After making certain that you are a suitable candidate for the smile design process we request photographs to be sent to us, usually by email though we will accept photos by post. We will provide detailed instructions on exactly how the photograph should be taken to produce useable photographs. The most important factors influencing a successful smile design are good focus, good detail (picture resolution) and the picture should have you facing directly at the camera.

Though most of the smile design work can be guided from facial structures it is also helpful to have a rough idea of the type of smile you are looking to achieve….

Once we have a good enough photograph to work from, expert advice is sought from your selected dentist. Advice from a fully experienced cosmetic dentist is always taken first before any smile design begins to ensure results are feasible and attainable….
