Dentist abroad saves British smiles

Dentist abroad saves British smiles

In the UK, the NHS will only offer you dentures but there is an alternative. The answer for many lies with finding a dentist abroad and travelling to Europe for treatment.

F

inding a dentist abroad could save your smile, just like thousands of other Brits who flock to European cities such as Budapest for cheap dental treatment. Losing your teeth is upsetting enough but listening to the prices charged by UK dentists for treatments such as implants is even worse. Tooth loss can be the result of an accident, gum disease or even from grinding your teeth at night. In the UK, the NHS will only offer you dentures but there is an alternative. The answer for many lies with finding a dentist abroad and travelling to Europe for treatment.

That’s exactly what Jackie Burchill from Shrewsbury did when she lost 12 teeth and was quoted £2,000 per implant to get back her smile. Luckily some friends recommended Budapest and Jackie was intrigued by the idea of visiting a dentist abroad for her treatment. Her research confirmed that Budapest is full of excellent dental clinics offering world class treatment but at much lower prices than in the UK. High tech dental procedures such as the dental implants Jackie wanted are much cheaper in Hungary and she was able to find a very experienced implant surgeon, Dr Attila Kaman, in the city. Jackie’s treatment included six dental implants, 10 crowns, four veneers and Zoom teeth whitening and cost only £7,880. She saved £16,000 on the price quoted to her in the UK.

Jackie is one of tens of thousands of patients travelling overseas for treatment. She chose Hungary because of the high standard of dentistry and the easy travel arrangements. When choosing a dentist abroad you will need to consider journey times as well as the cost of treatment. Some treatments, such as dental implants will need two trips so countries further than Europe may not be practical. Budapest is just a two hour flight from London, which is much more appealing than say travelling to India or Mexico for treatment.

Many people are also visiting a dentist abroad for cosmetic dental treatments. Chipped or wonky teeth are easily fixed with veneers but costs are high in the UK as cosmetic treatments are not available on the NHS. Whilst not medically necessary, this kind of dental work can restore confidence in your smile, helping you feel a different person. For many it’s simply too expensive to consider having it done at home, but prices overseas in places like Hungary can help your dreams come true. Emma Powerell’s confidence had been in tatters for years as many of her adult teeth failed to growth. She was left with baby teeth and perfected a closed mouth smile which made her look tense and unhappy. She was quoted £20,000 to have the bridges and crowns needed to set her smile straight but discovered a dental tourism company who helped her set up treatment in Budapest that cost only £3,000. The confidence she has gained has been a massive step for Emma, but only took a short flight to Budapest to make it happen.

What can you say about the SmileSavers Process?

What was your reason for the treatment?

I lost nearly all my own teeth through gum disease.

What were your initial fears surrounding traveling for dental treatment?

The possible language barrier, the long way to go if there were any problems with the work.

What would you say about the clinic the dentists and the dental treatment?

All excellent!!

What has been your experience of UK dentists?

Mainly the cost but also because of the slow response and apparent disinterest of the so called specialist who was requested to contact me by my dentist.

What would you say about Budapest?

A very beautiful city, great atmosphere, the people are friendly and helpful, the streets feel safe, excellent places to eat, loved the markets, good public transport. We loved it!

What would you say about the transportation provided?

What was your reason for choosing SmileSavers?

Quick response to my initial email and the fact that Veronika was based in UK so was easy to contact and had excellent English. I liked the look of the Implant Center which looked to have a strong team of very well qualified doctors.

How did the treatment change your life?

Great joy in being able to smile and laugh with confidence, not to have the discomfort, misery and inconvenience of dentures and denture fixative, to be able to eat normally. Without realising it I had been depressed for months and unable to work efficiently (I’m self employed so my income suffered a lot). I feel like a new person and everyone I know says I look younger, seem happier and am more like my old self – which I am.

How would you describe the whole experience?

Would you recommend it to other people?

What can you say about the SmileSavers Process?

What was your reason for the treatment?

I had been very self conscious about my teeth for many years. I would always cover my mouth when laughing or smiling. I have always hated getting my photograph taken. I meet a lot of people through my work and always felt very embarrassed about my teeth. Finally, I decided that I was going to do something about it.
I found Smile Savers while searching on the internet for dental treatment in Hungary. A few days later I spoke to a friend who had also investigated using Smile Savers. All of my questions were answered fully and professionally. I was made aware of every step in the process. Veronika was extremely helpful and informative. My friend was also extremely impressed with the service. However, she decided not to travel because her work was extremely intensive and would have involved many trips to the dentist. However, she, like me, has felt Smile Savers were more informative and professional than other companies.

What were your initial fears surrounding traveling for dental treatment?

I was nervous for a few days before I traveled to Budapest. I was worried that everything seemed ‘too good to be true’. In fact my mother who was traveling with me believed it was all ‘too good to be true’! I feared that the result would not be what I had wished for. I feared that no one would speak very much English and that I might not have been able to explain properly what I wanted. I also feared that I would be in a lot of pain or discomfort.

What would you say about the clinic the dentists and the dental treatment?

My experience at the Implant Centre was faultless. The clinic itself is very modern and extremely clean. The receptionists are very friendly and did everything they could to help. The room I was treated in was like any dentist room I have ever been in. There was really no difference. My dentist Dr. Zsuzsanna Juhasz was friendly, gentle, and I felt she had years of experience. She was honest with me and explained all my options. She was realistic. I knew what to expect and at all times she told me what she was doing and why.

What has been your experience of UK dentists?

What would you say about Budapest?

Budapest is really one of the most beautiful European cities. I had been told this before I left but can now say this from experience. The architecture has to be seen to be believed. We took a bus tour around the city and a boat tour one evening on the Danube. Really beautiful. You need at least 3 days to see everything. It is an easy city to get around also. We walked a lot and never got lost. Would definitely go back with some friends to sample the nightlife! People were overall very friendly. Shopping was excellent.

What would you say about the transportation provided?

We were picked up at the airport by Laszlo who took us to our apartment. He was friendly and made everything so easy. He gave us some information on Budapest and pointed out what sights he could. He was always prompt and efficient.

What was your reason for choosing SmileSavers?

How did the treatment change your life?

I’m smiling more and feel more confident when speaking and meeting people. I’m very happy with the quality of work.

How would you describe the whole experience?

Would you recommend it to other people?

Absolutely, without a doubt.

What can you say about the SmileSavers Process?

What was your reason for the treatment?

I had been suffering with abscesses in my mouth for about 10 years. These were due to gum disease. My teeth had become very loose. I felt there was no hope and was very depressed about it. I stopped smiling and covered my mouth whenever I spoke to anyone. I lost interest in myself.

What were your initial fears surrounding traveling for dental treatment?

I was afraid of the unknown I suppose. I had never been to Hungary before and I did not know anyone who had been abroad for dental or any medical treatment. It was unfamiliar territory and I did not know what was going to happen. However, it was my only hope. Saying that, speaking to Veronika reassured me immensely before I left. She arranged everything perfectly and was always available whenever I needed to talk to her.

What would you say about the clinic the dentists and the dental treatment?

With my hand on my heart I would say that the clinic, dentists and treatment are better that anything I have ever experienced in the UK. As soon as I entered the door I felt reassured. Dr Kaman was so kind and caring, and more importantly he explained everything to me. His professionalism and skill are beyond reproach. I asked if it was possible to get my teeth back to the shape and colour they were when I was younger. I took in photographs and everyone, including the technicians worked really hard to get me what I wanted. I now have the teeth that I had in my twenties. This would not have been possible for me had I not travelled to Budapest for treatment.

What has been your experience of UK dentists?

My NHS dentist did not seem to be helping me at all. It seemed that he would just wait until things were ‘critical’ and then he would act. Usually that action just involved removing the tooth in question. I visited three private dentists in the hope that they could help me and was devastated to discover that I could not afford what they were asking. One of them tried to help by offering me ‘deep cleaning’. Two visits cost me £400! All this did was loosen my teeth even more. I felt as though no-one cared and I had nowhere to turn. I had never thought of implants until my friend suggested it. However as said above when I started to look into it I realized that it was going to be impossible. I had varying prices these ranged from 30 to 50 thousand pounds! There was no way that I could ever have afforded that.

What would you say about Budapest?

Budapest is a beautiful city. There is a lot to see and do. It is really easy (and cheap) to get around on the metro system. The food is really nice and the people are very friendly.

What would you say about the transportation provided?

What was your reason for choosing SmileSavers?

I did weeks of research; however SmileSavers was the one site that I kept going back to. I read and re-read all of the testimonials. I looked at other media reports that were not even on the SmileSavers site and realized that these people knew what they were doing. So many people had enhanced their own lives. I hoped the same would happen for me.

How did the treatment change your life?

As I said, before my treatment I had become very depressed. You have control over your clothes, make-up etc. However, when your teeth go, if you don’t have the money to pay for it, there is nothing you can do about it. You feel helpless. Teeth are so important in your appearance. It is usually the first thing that people notice about you. If they are not right, your confidence goes and this messes up your life. If you have no control and cannot rectify the situation, you become depressed. As well as this you cannot eat properly. Eating becomes a chore instead of a pleasure. I left my work as a teacher for two years because the poison in my gums was making me feel tired and ill all the time. I went to Budapest in November 2008 and started my treatment. I was first fitted with temporaries until my implants had integrated with my bone. Even having these temporaries gave me more confidence and on December 15th I started a new job! Not only did I feel more confident in my appearance, I also felt physically better than I had done for years. It is only when you start to feel better that you realize how bad things have been. I actually cried when I first saw my new teeth. I will be eternally grateful to Dr Kaman and all of the team for the difference that they have made to my life.

How would you describe the whole experience?

Would you recommend it to other people?

I have already recommended Smile Savers to friends and family.

The clinic was great, dentists made me feel at ease, the treatment was of a very high level (I’ve been to lots of dentists both in the UK and Australia).

What would you say about Budapest?

Budapest is a nice city, very fast like London. You feel safe there.

What can you say about the SmileSavers Process?

What was your reason for the treatment?

I was in constant pain and was unable to eat anything solid as I had no back teeth. I was ashamed to smile as people would see the gaps in my lower teeth. I had a denture and bridge at the top that did not fit properly and my breath was not nice as I had receding gums and infections around my teeth.

What were your initial fears surrounding traveling for dental treatment?

I thought that it was a long way to go and if anything went wrong I would be alone away from home , friends and family. Also if follow up treatment was required I had got to travel to Hungary, find hotels, arrange transport etc. I wondered if there would be a language problem and I would not get what I thought that I was getting.

What would you say about the clinic the dentists and the dental treatment?

The clinic was very nice. The individual dentists rooms were bright and airy. The girls on reception were so friendly, remembered your name each visit. Very polite but also very approachable.
My dentist was kindness itself. He was very gentle and reassuring. He understood how frightened I was and explained everything that he was going to do as he was doing it. It helped that the person that I saw in London was the person who treated me in Hungary. There was already a connection between us. I did not feel as though I was going out to see a stranger.
I cannot say that there was no pain, there was. But we were given painkillers when we had treatment, and when I look in the mirror and see a mouth full of white shiny teeth I can only say “I wish I had gone before”. Dr. Kamman did an excellent job of putting the implants in and Dr. Lantos through his experience helped me to choose the colour and shape of the teeth that suit me best.

What has been your experience of UK dentists?

I have spent a small fortune on dentists here and have ended up with terrible teeth. Without spending a lot more than I could aford to no one could give me a result that would last, or a result that would not deteriorate very quickly.

What would you say about Budapest?

A really beautiful city, so historical. I did the river cruise and the open topped bus trip. The people were very friendly. I was there alone but I didn’t have to worry, most people spoke English and if they didn;t they would call over someone who did to help me.

What would you say about the transportation provided?

What was your reason for choosing SmileSavers?

A friend was looking to find somewhere that we could go for implants and after looking at a lot of different ones he recommended your site as he thought that it met the criteria that we were looking for. Dr Kamman had done over 10,000 procedures so he would know what he was doing.

How did the treatment change your life?

I am retired but I feel 10 years younger now that before I went. Teeth are one of the first things that people notice about you. I was always afraid to smile as my teeth were so unattractive. My breath was not nice because of the state of my teeth. Now I am looking forward to going on holiday when I have recovered and be able to smile at strangers and if someone want to kiss me………….
